The advantage and disadvantage of using electric dictionaries

BY SIMON JIANG

Hi everybody, today I want to analyze the advantage and disadvantage of using electric dictionaries.Because nowadays more and more students use electronic dictionaries instead of ordinary dictionaries, The discussion about using electronic dictionaries has been popular these years.

Let's have a look at its advantages and disadvantages first. The most important advantage of an electronic dictionary is that it’s very convenient to use. Whenever you meet new words or expressions, you can know the meaning quickly. You don’t need to waste much time turning the page seeking for the new words . What's more, electronic dictionaries are becoming more and more advanced: they can pronounce the words clearly, provide sample sentences to illustrate word usage and store difficult words for special memorization.Thats special function may help you remember some new words with high efficiency .Last but not least, the designing of electronic dictionaries are more and more portable, and they are easy for students carrying.

However, the negative effects are also obvious. First of all, students may rely too much on the electronic dictionary—they never put their heart into learning new words and expressions. secondly, some explanations are neither complete nor accurate, which are quite misleading. Finally, the convenient ways do not necessarily lead to progress in learning. Diligence is always the decisive factor, because "there is no royal road to learning".

Up until now, we can see it clearly that an electronic dictionary is not beneficial or harmful in itself. The key lies in the user—so long as we can make proper use of it, it can be helpful to us in many respects. So no matter what kind of dictionaries we used,we shall remember the new words as soon as possible after searching them.

In my opinion, the dictionary is just a tool of study. Whether we can benifit from using it or not is not depend on what kind of dictionary we used, but depend on ourselves how to use it.

  2. Yes, in Korea, some teachers think that electronic dictionary is not good for study, because electronic dictionary has many functions, except dictionary. To use my electronic dictionary, I can listen to music, watch a video and so on. Even todays, some electronic dictionary has a wireless function. So, sometimes this functions could be helpful, but they also could interrupt to study.

access. The college I’m staying now is bad with internet connection, sometimes
has connection but most of the time it does not have connection at all”
